Abstract

It is very important to know the gender equality consciousness of the military leading members because it makes them secure the reliance and the comradeship one another and they are in charge of the commanding and education of their subordinates to make good roles as members of the society in the future. At this point, this research on the gender equality consciousness has a lot of meanings. For the research, we conducted a survey using the Korean Gender Egal itarianism Scale(KGES) developed by the Korean Women¡¯s Development Institute(KWDI) in 1999. A total number of 361 officers(rank of major, captain & lieutenant) and NCOs working for the Army as of September 1, 2003 responded to the survey.
The results of the survey are as follow.
1. The military leading members seem to have more egalitarian attitudes toward gender gap compared to the general population. In particular, female members showed higher level of gender equality consciousness than male members and both members showed the highest level in the part of family life and the lowest level in the part of social-cultural life.
2. Compared to the general public and teachers, on the whole, male members showed higher level of gender equality consciousness than men, lower level than male teachers. On the other hand, female members showed higher level of gender equality consciousness than women and female teachers.
3. According to the result of average score on each question of the survey, female members showed higher scores of gender equality consciousness than male in the 78 questions of 80 except 2. Only 2 questions above are "male students memorize better than female ones" and "men are more difficult to control the sexual desire than women." The biggest gender gap in the questions are as follow. (1) "The system of householder discriminates against women¡¯s rights" in the family-life parts. (2) "Male is more suitable for the school-administrative job just like a principal than female. in the education-life parts. (3) "I will make male promote first prior to female when both are same abilities" in the work-life parts. (4) "Females tend to ask privileges under the slogan of gender equality" in the social-cultural life parts. According to the results, male members show conservative attitude toward the women¡¯s demand for rights. They have fixed ideas and prejudices on women¡¯s vocational role and also they have lack of understanding about the gender-equality policy.
4. On the point of efforts for the gender equalization, male soldiers, especially field officers, responded that they have high level of gender equality consciousness and efforts. but female soldiers and company officers responded negatively.
80% of respondents agree with the necessity of education about gender equality consciousness and 50% of them responded that education-needed group is the field officers. As we see this results, we can estimate that we need the education first for the higher rank officers to make all soldiers keep the gender equality attitude.
